Doing Good Works Around the World
Bishop Paul M. Boyle of Jamaica, 2002

Bishop Paul M. Boyle is energized by his ministry, which includes running two orphanages in Jamaica. The orphanages serve an entirely black clientele, and the boys and girls he works with are among the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. Moreover, the children are about 99% Protestant -- predominantly Seventh Day Adventists, Baptists, Methodists and Pentecostals -- reflecting the diverse religious heritage of the Caribbean island.

"They're all non-Catholic, but they're all God's children," says Bishop Boyle, who has been working in Jamaica for 11 years. "NCCF gave us the funding for these orphanages." One of the facilities he oversees, St. John Bosco, is a boys' home, and the second facility, Our Lady of Hope, serves both boys and girls. Some of the children entering these homes are orphans, while others are runaways or were abandoned by their families. Still others have had problems with the law.

Bishop Boyle has taken these troubled children and trained them to succeed in the larger society. Both vocational and college coursework are offered.

"We have a butcher shop where young men are trained in meat preparation," notes the Bishop. "At St. John Bosco, we teach animal husbandry, and the young boys are raising 500 pigs. On a smaller scale, we offer training in carpentry, culinary arts, computer skills, and lawn care -- and we're just opening an auto mechanics shop." The orphanages boast an outstanding 90% placement rate of their graduates in local businesses.

In addition to gifts of money, some donors choose to come to Jamaica and volunteer their time at the orphanages -- a practice which Bishop Boyle welcomes. "Any donor can come and visit," he says. He was very impressed by a group of college students who came to volunteer.

"One young man, while hiking in the mountains of our diocese, met an elderly gentleman without shoes," recalls the Bishop. "He immediately gave his sneakers to the fellow. The other students were so impressed by this act of generosity, that they emptied their suitcases and left behind for the poor everything they had brought."
